Canadian customs and manners

If you plan to live in Canada or spend a long time, you should know that Canadians are descendants of different races and religions, that is why it is not easy to define a typical Canadian family. Although the majority of Canadians are either Catholic or Protestant, many others belong to other religions. Some cultural characteristics are shared by most Canadians. And for that, you have to know Canadian customs and manners.

For example, we must bear in mind that they do not use to shake hands when introduced to someone. It is not frowned upon to lightly touch the other person's man during a conversation. It is not customary to hug or kiss when greeting. And at the time of introduction, in Canada the first name is used and the last name last. If you are introduced to an older person, you should refer to this person by their last name followed by the courtesy title: Ms., Mrs., Mr., or Dr. For example: “Hello Mr. Martin. I am very pleased to meet you. My name is Yuri. » An Informal Greeting: «Hi Thomas. How are you? »

And if you are in a homestay, Canadian families are usually not as effusive when greeting, so don't be disappointed or sad if your host family is not very excited when you arrive or at the greeting. In most homes, shoes are removed when entering the house. And if you want to smoke, it is less and less popular here and it is not allowed inside most public buildings. Many families do not allow smoking inside their homes. If you smoke, please mention it on your registration form so that we can place you with an appropriate family.

Anyway; Canada enjoys an open society free from class distinctions. In Canada everyone has the same right and respect, regardless of their race or religion. Any racist comment is very frowned upon.
