Historic Places of Canada

There are many historical places of great importance to Canada. They bear witness to key moments in this nation and illustrate its human creativity and cultural traditions.

Each National Historic Site tells its own unique story, a part of Canada's larger history, which add a sense of time, identity, and place to our understanding of Canada as a whole.

National Historic Sites are found in every province and territory, from urban and rural locations, to the Great Lakes. They can be sacred spaces, battlefields, archaeological sites, buildings, and cityscapes.

They can vary in size from a single linear channel structure spanning great distances. Many national historic landmarks are still used today for work and worship, commerce and industry, housing and leisure.

It is estimated that more than 1500 places, people and events have been honored by the Government of Canada. And the list continues to grow as Canada's history unfolds.

Together, all of these commemorations make up what is known as the Canadian National Historic Sites system. In each generation the system has evolved in view of the change this nation has of itself. Today there is an increased interest in social history that reflects the achievements and everyday experiences of Canadians.

In sum; Each National Historic Site is an unmistakable and vibrant symbol of Canadian identity. It is also a learning center, a wealth of information, a life history adventure, an experience of what Canada used to be and what it is today.
