"Cloisonné", a traditional Beijing artisan technique

The first steps in this artisan technique were taken during the Qianlong period of the Qing dynasty, the technique gained a good reputation at home and when it became known abroad it also did very well. The "cloisonne" technique is based on subtle pinching and flattened brass wires welded onto a copper body. The form is then filled with a colored ceramic glaze and baked. The result? The object in question can be a smoking set, glasses, plates, bowls, boxes for spices, ornaments in the shape of animals, lamps and lanterns. In total, around 60 types of objects can be made with this technique.
