Labor Day in China

El Labor Day It is an annual holiday celebrated around the world that as a result of the trade union movement, to celebrate the economic and social achievements of workers.

Most countries celebrate Labor Day on May 1, and it is popularly known as International Labor Day, while some celebrate the first Monday in September. This date has its origin in the eight-hour shift movement, which advocated eight hours for work, eight hours for recreation, and eight hours for rest.

And China is no exception in celebrating it on May 01, which is an important holiday carrying comparable importance as the National Day, which occurs on October 1, and the Spring Festival on the first day of the first lunar month.

In 1999, the Labor Day holiday was extended from 1 day to 3 days. The Chinese government made a 7-day vacation moving the weekends before and after, in addition to those 3 days. The Labor Day holiday was one of the three Golden Weeks in China, allowing millions of Chinese to travel during this period.

Many workers can extend the weekend to make it a longer stay that can translate to millions of Chinese traveling domestically and internationally. Double and triple travel rates and reservations weeks in advance have to be made, even months in advance for international travel.

The accumulations of the tour groups flock to the main tourist destinations in China. If you can avoid it, it is advisable not to travel domestically during the week around May 01. However, if you are in China, the May weather is usually very pleasant, if a little humid.

Government offices and banks will be closed on May 1-3, but almost everything else, from tourist spots to shops, restaurants and the post office will be open for business.
