Emilio Yunis Turbay was born in Sincelejo, capital of the department of Sucre and is considered a pioneer in the study of human genetics in Colombia and Latin America.
Emilio Yunis dedicated himself to genetics when it was just beginning to be talked about and that is why he is considered the father of human genetics and medical genetics in Colombia and Latin America.
He is a geneticist of the University of Antioquia, but he developed his career in the National University of Colombia in which he was linked until 1997, where he obtained all academic degrees and introduced the discipline of genetics in the country, the scope of which was extended to all of South America.
Within his long career, Yunis Turbay introduced the discipline of Cytogenetics and Clinical Genetics in Colombia, he is the founder of the Institute of Genetics of the National University, pioneer of studies on paternity of the Colombian Institute of Family Welfare.
On October 22, 2005, he was elected Hispanic Scientist of the Year in the United States. His work in genetics has served him to scientifically explain the history and regionalisms of Colombia.
