Guaduas, a municipality full of history

One of the municipalities with the longest history in the center of Colombia es Saint Michael of the Guaduas, better known simply as Guaduas, located in the Lower Magdalena region in the Department of cundinamarca, just over 126 kilometers northwest of the city of Bogota,.

It was founded in the mid-sixteenth century on the old Camino Real that connected the port of Honda on the Magdalena River with Santafé (today Bogotá). Its name comes from the word "Guadua", a type of cane that is abundant in the region; and its historic center was declared a National Monument in 1959.

This urban complex is characterized by the fact that its buildings are dominated by the heights of one or two floors; where the oldest or traditional ones built in bareque with eaves and balconies are combined; and new buildings built in revoked brick.

This town was the center of experimentation for the famous Botanical Expedition headed by José Celestino Mutis, also the birthplace of independence Polycarpa SalavarrietaIn fact, the house where he was born and lived is today the Museum Polycarpa Salavarrieta, and there are beautiful pieces of art and household objects from the colonial era.

El Obelisk Antonio Galán, Convento de la Soledad, Town Hall, and the House of the viceroys, are other attractions to visit in Guaduas.
