Republican architecture of Manizales

The city of Manizales has the most coherent and complete set of republican architecture in the country. After the fires of the XNUMXs and taking advantage of the boom in the coffee boom, it was thought to totally change the image of the city. Materials such as wood and bahareque would go down in history.

It was thought to rebuild the city with materials resistant to fire and earthquakes. It was then that European and North American architects and engineers were brought to Manizales; the best known were the French Julien Polty, the Italians Angelo Papio, Giancarlo Bonarda, Giovanni Buscaglione, the Englishman John Wotard, the German Whilelm Lehder (Father of the infamous Carlos Lehder), the American company Ullen Company, among others. They all left an invaluable architectural legacy in the city and imported new techniques and styles unknown to the country at the time.

Taking into account the area of its historical zone, Manizales has what is surely the largest group of republican architecture in the country. There are about 150 buildings of this style declared as part of the national architectural heritage. Some works include: the Palace of the Interior, as well as the Hotel Europa, the Railway Station and the Episcopal Palace.
