The tour in the salt cathedral of Zipaquirá

The Salt Cathedral of Zipaquirá is a Historical heritage, cultural and religious. It is a temple built inside the salt mines of Zipaquirá, in the Sabana de Bogotá, in the Department of cundinamarca. It was declared the First Wonder of Colombia and considered the eighth wonder of the world. The New Cathedral was inaugurated on December 16, 1995. It was designed by the Colombian architect Roswell Garativo Peral.

Inside there is a rich artistic collection, especially salt and marble sculptures in an environment full of a deep religious sense that attracts pilgrims and tourists.

Itinerary

The first sections of the gallery show the representation of the 14 stations of the Via Crucis, in which Jesus is represented as a cross carved in salt rock. Behind the Via Crucis is the Dome, which represents the manifestation of the celestial, denoted by its finely carved circular shape and by the bluish light that decorates it.

A few meters further on is the Choir, so called because it is the space for the interpretation of religious vocal music for the ceremonies that take place in the Cathedral. Its shape and location allow the sound to be heard perfectly throughout the main nave.

The entrance to the Cathedral itself is the Narthex, made up of three passageways whose walls are carved in saline rock. After passing the Narthex, you can access each of the three naves of the Cathedral: on the left, the Nave of the Nativity, where the Baptistery is located.

The children baptized there should receive not fresh water but brine water, to prevent the baptismal font from decomposing, which, as expected, is carved out of saline rock. In the center is the main nave, the Nave of Life, where the main altar and the Cross are, the largest carved in saline rock in the world, and which offers extremely interesting visual effects.

Finally, to the right, the Ship of Death, bathed in a purple light and reminding us that we came from earth and we must return to it. The tour ends with the Stairs of Penance, a series of steep steps leading to the Via Crucis gallery and the outside world.
