The Casa de Diego Velazquez, the oldest house in Cuba

Casa Particular in Santiago de Cuba It is one of the cities that you can visit in Cuba, in addition to the capital, the beautiful Trinidad, Cienfuegos or PIanr del Río, just to name the ones that come to mind now. It has many historical corners and a good place to start the tour is the House of Don Diego Velázquez.

Diego Velázquez de Cuéllar was an advanced Spanish conqueror who became the first governor of Cuba in 1511. Born into a noble family of Cuéllar, he became a soldier and just a year after Columbus arrived in America he crossed the Atlantic to the uncovered lands. He arrived on Columbus's second voyage and dedicated himself to conquering and populating Cuba and from here he sponsored the expeditions that ended in Mexico years later. In Cuba he lived in a large house located in Santiago de Cuba and in his bedroom in this house he died on the night of June 11 to 12, 1524. This house was built between 1516 and 1530 and it is the oldest house of all the country.

It has things of Mudejar art, balconies, lattices, stone walls, a gold and silver smelting furnace and many original doors, windows and ceilings. It is a real gem. It also has a central patio with a cistern. Do not miss it since today it works inside the Museum of Historical Environment.
