Oviedo Lagoon: A Wonder within the Jaragua National Park

Beautiful flamingos in the Laguna de Oviedo

The Oviedo Lagoon is located within the Jaragua National Park, in the eastern part of the province of Pedernales, very close to town The Cajuil and barely separated from Caribbean Sea by a thin sandy strip.

The Laguna de Oviedo, also known as Trujín LagoonIt is the second largest salt water lagoon in the country, its surface area is 27 square kilometers, its length is 3 kilometers and the average depth is less than 1 meter.

The surface of the lagoon is characterized by a milky appearance because at the bottom of it there is a concentrated sandy-silty, presence of other minerals, remains of algae, remains of marine mollusks and fulfilling a kind of cushion the existence of higher aquatic plants.

The Oviedo Lagoon always houses the presence of birdsBoth migratory as Residents, in total there are some 70 species, mostly waterfowl of great beauty such as the spoon, Flemish and heronsHowever, in recent years some birds have suffered danger of extinction such as the yaguaza and Crowned Pigeon.

Among the reptiles that inhabit this lagoon is the Rhinoceros Iguana, very characteristic throughout the Hispaniola Island. You can also observe the presence of sea turtles not in the lagoon but on the nearby beach, which becomes quite a spectacle especially at the time when they nest their young.

A walk through the Laguna de Oviedo is truly unforgettable because you will be in contact with the nature and you will be able to observe a large number of birds and reptiles that will surprise you at first glance but are actually harmless.

The sightseeing tour includes three trails: the Walk of the Flamingos, The Caritas del Guanal and Iguanas Cay. Walking the three trails will take you a day that will last a lifetime due to direct contact with nature and its inhabitants.
