Burford, the medieval town

BurfordOne of the prettiest little medieval towns in England is a busy community of around 1.000 people. It is located 35 km west of the city of Oxford, in the County of Oxfordshire.

The city's merchants were granted a charter to sustain their own markets more than 900 years ago, and today's business people have developed this site continuing the long tradition of good service and supplying luxury and excellent basic necessities to residents and visitors.

With its medieval bridge, old stone houses and attractive Tudor and Georgian facades, Burford is rightly called one of the most picturesque towns in England.

It is often referred to as the 'Cotswolds Portal. It should be noted that the town was originally an Anglo-Saxon fortified ford which then grew to become an important regional road junction and wealthy wool town.

The village houses the Tolsey Museum, a beautiful local museum that illustrates the social and industrial past of the city. The beautiful church is a true gem with many interesting monuments tracing some of the great Burford families.

There is also the signature, on the baptismal font, of Antonio Sedley, one of the Levellers besieged in the church in 1649 - three of the ringleaders were executed by Oliver Cromwell's men in the cemetery.

With its long history of hospitality, beautiful Cotswold architecture, unique shops and galleries, and one of only twenty churches in the country. Burford makes a perfect place to visit and stay.
