Rolling Cheese Festival

Cooper's Hill Cheese-Rolling and Wake

A moment of the Rolling Cheese Festival

The celebrations that take place in different parts of England can be truly surprising and among the vast number of events highlights the Rolling Cheese Festival o Cooper's Hill Cheese-Rolling and Wake, an original event that is held every year on the last Monday in May.

It takes place on Cooper's Hill, very close to the Gloucester district and despite the fact that it was originally a local event, the fame of this festival has crossed national and international borders.

The celebration consists of launching from the top of the hill a Double Gloucester cheese which has a weight of approximately 4 kilos. Participants must run chasing the cheese down the hill, so you can imagine the number of falls that can be in this celebration.

The person who manages to catch it or who was closest to doing it and reaches the finish line wins a prize consisting of the cheese they chased. It may seem silly but the truth is that it is very funny to see everyone running down the hill after cheese.

It is an event in which many people participate and where in addition to having a lot of fun there are also different injuries or even breakages, something very normal in this kind of event, that is why there are always several ambulances waiting to see how the events unfold.

The origin of this festival is not 100% clear but the first references date back to 1856 and in 1884 it became an annual event as we know it today, although throughout history some characteristics have been changed. and it has even included a master of ceremonies who is in charge of throwing the cheese. Did you know about this very original celebration?
