Greek thinkers, writers and philosophers, part II

Archimedes

Last Tuesday we made a first part of a list of ancient Greek thinkers, writers and philosophers. Famous names, even thousands of years after his death. They have all left their mark on our western culture.

So today we return to the topic and present the last part of this list of famous people from Ancient Greece:

  • Aristophanes: 446 - 386 BC He was also a playwright, comedy writer. He wrote about 40 although only 11 have survived completely and of the others only fragments are known. Famous for ridiculing the Athenians, even Plato said that one of his works, The Clouds, served for the trial and execution of Socrates. Not so much for his style but for the sublime reflection of everyday life in Athens, his works are of great value today.
  • Plato: 424 - 348 BC A student of Socrates, we owe it to his pen to know the thoughts of the second who never left anything in writing. When he was 29 years old, he witnessed the execution of his teacher and has left 13 letters and 35 dialogues as his legacy. The Father of Western philosophy, for many.
  • Aristotle: 384 - 322 BC Student of Plato, was his first "revisionist" and critic. He left 47 works, readings, and is considered as the last of the great Greek philosophers. In addition, he was fond of biology and logic and was none other than Alexander the Great's tutor.
  • Euclid: 300 BC Great mathematician and geometrist, works a lot in the library of Alexandria. Author of The Elements, millions of copies made over time.
  • Archimedes: 287 - 212 BC Inventor, mathematician, engineer, astronomer. He calculated the number Pi very precisely and according to the story Eureka shouted! I found it, when he discovered how to define the volume of objects by submerging it in water.
