The best archaeological sites in Greece

acropolis

Greece. Greece is synonymous with white villages with blue windows and doors, dreamy beaches and archaeological sites, isn't it? Well, we have presented you before a top 5 of the best beaches in the country and now it is the turn of these places with so much history behind them.

The country is full of them and outside of Athens and the classic route the tourist is likely to short-circuit when selecting what to see and why. Therefore, take note of this short list of the best archaeological sites from Greece:

First of all we have of course the Acropolis of Athens. It represents the culture of Classical Greece at its highest point and although the city of Athens itself, the modern city, is not beautiful, you have to stay a few days to feel the Acropolis. In second place, Delphi, a site of influence in the ancient east and without rivals. The oracle received Athenian kings and leaders to predict events, but in addition to what is said, the landscapes are beautiful, the ruins are well preserved and there are several museums.

Third, Olimpia. The Olympic Games were born here and although today they travel the entire world every 4 years in ancient times the most civilized cities gathered in Olympia to participate in competitions and festivals. Bedroom, epidaurus, the huge and vast sanctuary that is in ruins but still fabulous: its very well preserved theater is still used for concerts and music and theater festivals.

Fifth, Phaistos, in Crete. Although it must compete with Knossos, the truth is that this site seems to be more genuine and less artificial. If you go to Crete then you visit them together and voila. And finally, the sixth place occupies it Vergine, an archaeological site and museum that is an example of Macedonian culture with the tomb of Philip II of Macedonia.
