The best churches in Santorini

churches-in-santorini

One of the best islands in Greece is undoubtedly Santorini, but beyond its beaches and museums we can well do church tourism. I am not particularly religious but I like churches very much. I like the architecture, the silence and solemnity of its interiors. I always think that when the world was much more divided between rich and poor, the interior of a sumptuous church must look like Heaven itself.

If Santorini and the churches we have a handful of interesting temples to see. The island is known for its white churches with blue domes, you see them as you get closer with the ferry, but each one is unique in its own way, has its own history and charm. Let's see some of the most important churches of Santorini:

  • Orthodox Cathedral of Santorinii: it is the largest church on the island and it is in the center of Fira. It dates from the XNUMXth century, it is not the oldest, and its interior has a series of charming frescoes.
  • Santorini Catholic Cathedral: it is close to the previous one and is dedicated to Saint John the Baptist.
  • Church of Panagia Episkopi: it was built in times of Byzantine rule and it is fortunate that it has survived to this day.
  • Dominican convent: It is in the Catholic neighborhood of Fira and houses many medieval art treasures. Today 12 nuns still inhabit it.
  • Agios Nikolaos Monastery: It is a complex that is between the villages of Imerovigli and Firostefani. Inside there is an ecclesiastical and folklore museum.
  • Chapel of Panagia Katefiani: It is on a hill overlooking Perissa beach and has great views.
  • Prophet Elijah Monastery: it is at the top of the highest hill in Santorini.
