The emergence of the Currency

drachm

The economic progress of the Aegean world was accelerated with the appearance of the currency. The minted coin and issued by the State began to be used in Asia Minor, in the kingdom of Lydia, at the beginning of the kingdom of the XNUMXth century BC
From there it went to the cities of Ionia, from where it spread throughout the Mediterranean.
The use of currency facilitated transactions, created a new type of fortune, independent of the land. Until then wealth had consisted of land, herds, but now people are enriched in commerce, in industry, whose capital was the amount of coins they owned. The coins were silver, they weighed 6 grams, they were called Drachm, First they had a turtle engraved, then each city engraved its own seal, the Mine was worth 100 Drachmas, the Talent was worth 60 Drachma it was divided into 6 Óbolos, a sheep was worth 1 Drachma.
These nouveau riche were rivals to the nobles who ruled Greek cities, as they aspired to share their political privileges with them. It greatly affected the small rural owners, since they began to lend coins at interest, usury began with great force. The debtor who did not pay his land was taken away from him, and he became the slave of his creditor.
The noble class that until the XNUMXth century BC, had dominated the government, were attacked by the new rich, merchants and industrialists, who wanted to intervene in the direction of the city and the impoverished who demanded the abolition or reduction of their debts, willing to come to violence.
The danger was great, the nobility no longer had the power of other times, for the armed struggle, the nobles no longer had the power to win, it was when a tyrant was appointed to rule.

The lack of culture kills the towns. Everything that is linked to our history and
it should be of everyone's interest. It is in history where we choose wisdom and culture, also KNOWING DOES NOT TAKE PLACE.
