The Hill of Mars

areopagus-hlp

La Hill of mars, Areios Payments, is located northwest of the Acropolis of Athens and is very popular with all those tourists who follow the path of the Apostle Saint Paul. In ancient times this site functioned as the court of Athens since the god Ares was supposed to have been judged right here by the Gods due to the death of Poseidon's son.

In Roman times the hill and its buildings were used as the site of the Council of Elders of the Roman Senate and its members were made up of those who had held some public office. Later some reforms were made and the Areopagus was cut almost all its functions, except that of a court of justice for the murderers.

The Hill of Mars or Areopagus stands on a marble-studded hill and is just across from the entrance to the Acropolis. Its marble steps are so slippery that they are never easy to climb, and rainy days are often damned tricky so watch out!
