Propylaea from the Acropolis

1athenacropolislospropltj8

Like most Greek enclosures, the central part of the Acropolis You enter through an external construction that acts as a portico to prepare for the subsequent visit to the temples. Its about propylaeum, and here we find one that was built no less than in the time of Pericles according to a project of Mnesicles between the years 437 and 432 BC.

This propylene forms a truly colossal entrance of 13,12 x 25,04 meters and is formed by six doric columns almost nine meters high. The walls are made up of padded ashlars and its interior is divided into two hallways separated by a wall into which five doors open. What is striking is that the columns are absolutely straight on the outside, and curved on the inside, which helps to create an optical effect of parallelism on both sides of them.

If we approach the south wing we will see that there is a small portico with three Doric columns. This space was used in particular as propylaea to the temple of Athena Nike, being the northern part the largest of all and knowing itself as picture gallery since here were Polignoto's paintings. Unfortunately this construction was never finished since the expense was a lot according to the priests so the building was finished here.
