The Sanctuary of Apollo and the oracle

In central Greece, in ancient delphus, is the Sanctuary of Apollo, one of the most important sacred sites of antiquity. Here was a popular oracle, the instrument by which the gods communicated, drugged priestesses in between, with human beings. But well that Defos was, for the Greeks, the center of the world since the eagles that Zeus had launched into the sky were found in the sky of Delfo.

Archaeological excavations showed that this area was already inhabited in the 15th century BC and that it was the monks from Crete who brought the cult of Apollo back in the XNUMXth century. Here the dolphin-shaped version of Apollo is formed. Its importance attracted many pilgrims, kings, people of different ranks and others who came to consult the oracle or ask Apollo questions about the course of wars, politics and business. What remains of the Temple of Apollo and that we can see today dates from the XNUMXth century BC although there are still remains of the two previous temples.

The Delphic oracle was abolished in AD 393 when the Roman Emperor Theodosius made Christianity the official religion of the Byzantine Empire. Many temples, not only this one, were dismantled and their parts were used in other buildings. The oracle, it is worth clarifying, was in a small chamber of the temple in which only the fortune teller could enter, a middle-aged woman who did not have sexual relations and fasted before speaking with the god. And no one could force the oracle to speak so it only "worked" on certain days. The entrance to the museum costs € 9.
