Each town has its or their typical clothes and a country like Greece, with so many centuries of history and lands that have been under different powers, has not just one but several. By region, we could say, although it is possible to speak of a typical male and female costume. But for example, Crete is one of the most important regions and has a rich history and culture. Here, we have that this that we see in the photograph is the typical dress of Cretan women.

The old ones cretan women they wore pants, something common in the southern islands of the country. The suit also has an apron in front and another in the back and a black velvet jacket that is richly embroidered with gold threads. Gold is also present in the necklace they wear around their necks and on their heads there is a handkerchief called "mandili" that is hand-crocheted and that recalls the loss of the capital of the Byzantine Empire, Contantinopla. The tassels hanging over the eyes are said to represent the tears shed by the people who died in the explosion at the Arkadi Monastery in Crete. And finally, if the mandili is low, it is a sign that you should not speak to women.
