Vai, a beach with palm trees in Crete

Vai Beach

One of the most beautiful beaches on the island of Crete is Plan your trip. It is a beautiful beach full of palm trees and is one of the most popular in the Mediterranean Sea because it has the palm forest largest natural not only in Greece but also in all of Europe. The species of palm is the phoenix theophrasti, a species native to Crete that is confined to southern Greece although it can appear on some coasts of Turkey as well. It is a tall palm tree, 15 meters high, with many branches and leaves that can measure between two and three meters.

Tourists came to Vai in the late 70s, not before. They were hippie tourists who came from other popular destinations like Preeveli and Matala. Backpackers from all over the world arrived in the 80s and the place became a mixed, heterogeneous, somewhat chaotic destination. The result was that the authorities intervened and Vai was then declared a "protected area". The valuable forest was recovered and the beach underwent an extreme cleaning process.

To this day Vai beach is a great tourist destination and luckily it is still very well cared for. From here you can travel to the islands of Sitia, Palekastro and Dionysades.
