Why visit Santorini? Well, because it is one of the most beautiful Greek islands and because here you will enjoy the most wonderful sunsets of your life. The sun, setting on the blue waters of the Aegean Sea has no equal and the same is the volcanic relief of the bay, it is a precious landscape. When is it convenient for you to go? Well, the best months are August and September, when it comes to cultural events: in August the Jazz Festival with invited international artists and also the party, a festival with fireworks, colors and sounds that explode over the Santorini caldera simulating a volcanic eruption. In September there is another music festival, the Santorini Festival to dry.
And what can you see and what can you do? Well, you cannot miss the sunsets that I name above, especially those seen from Oia, from one of its taverns overlooking the sea. There are always people waiting for the same thing so go early. You should also visit some interesting historical sites like the prehistoric settlement of Akrotiri, hidden under dry lava for centuries, the ancient Thira, some old churches and monasteries and the ruins of the Venetian castle.
Fira is the port city and you get to it by ferry or hydrofoil. From here, trips are by taxi or buses or donkeys, although few of these animals remain. Fira it is a beautiful city, with houses that seem to be hanging from the hillside.
