What to see in Syntagma Square, in Athens

Syntagma Square

Each city or each country has its main square and in the case of Greece and Athens that square is Syntagma Square. It is a square that has been around for more than a century and although at the beginning of the XNUMXth century it was full of trees and there were no cars, it is still beautiful today.

We can translate your name to Plaza Constitution and the name refers to when Otto, King of Greece, was pushed to sign one in 1843. In front of it stands the old Royal Palace, today the Greek Parliament, a function that has been carried out since 1934. It is a building of neoclassical style that is in turn surrounded by gardens open to the public, something that the building does not enable. But you can always witness the changing of the presidential guard facing the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, well traditionally.

Square It was designed and built in the XNUMXth century, after King Otto moved the capital from Nafplio to Athens. And a month after his coronation, that military uprising took place that forced him to sign a constitution. Since then the square has been, is and still will be the place chosen for all marches and protests. Some trees still have, among cypresses and orange trees that provide their shade, although there are also clear areas.

The square has lived a great and deep restoration not too long ago and its design has not been touched, thankfully. There is white marble that was like new, on the benches, there are old lamp posts that were replaced by more modern and beautiful ones, the fountain has been renovated and new ponds have been placed on one side of the square and the other. And most of the staircase on Avenida Amaias is also new.

What can you see if you stop at Syntagma Square a while? Well the Parliament of Greece built in 1843 with 365 rooms and a single bathroom, the Monument to the Unknown Soldier in front of the building dating from 1929 and the doves that come and go.
