Ballycarbery Castle, Kerry

In county Kerry, about 3 kilometers from Cahersiveen, are the ruins of a beautiful castle, the Ballycarbery Castle. Its ruins face directly the sea and are a short distance from Fort Cahergall and Fort Leacanabuile. These ruins date from the 1652th century although the castle was built on earlier ruins. Some historical sources say that it is the McCarthy More Castle but it is not known for sure. The castle later passed into the hands of Sir Valentine Browne, after the death of the last McCarthy More and in XNUMX it was attacked and burned by parliamentary forces.

In the XNUMXth century the site was exploited and someone built a house using part of the walls. The Lauder family lived here for a time, but the house was demolished at the beginning of the XNUMXth century. Regarding the castle itself, there is very little of the wall that surrounds it, but you can see the remains of a staircase inside a wall and some windows for archers. The lower floor has several chambers but only one still has the ceiling and walls. There is a living room with a high ceiling and in one corner a staircase that goes up to the upper floor. There are actually two ladders, one in very good condition and the other badly damaged.

The first floor is covered with grass and some windows and small rooms can be seen, all in the open air. It is the most accessible part of the castle
