Called Snacks They are a kind of aperitif, let's say Portuguese tapas, widely consumed not only in Lisbon but in practically the whole country.
Petiscos should not be confused with salty which are savory pastries rather a competition for pastry shops and not so much for bars or restaurants.
The preferred time for the Portuguese to have this aperitif is usually late in the afternoon, in a simple tavern with a wine and a petisco.
There is a wide variety of petiscos that you can choose from, some of the most typical that are usually found in bars are the olives generally of the black ones, fried squid y clams especially in coastal areas, fig with ham o melon with ham, some types of Portuguese cheeses, white bean salad and, of course, one of the country's main dishes, the cod, which can be served as a petisco in many different ways, for example golden cod, cod croquettes or fritters or chickpea and cod salad among others.
An important note to finish. These appetizers are often served in restaurants while
wait for the food. They are not chosen, but they will probably already be on the table when we sit at it and if they are consumed they are paid.
