The Alhárabe River in Moratalla

For many Murcians surely still the Alhárabe river, also known as the Moratalla River, will be a small tributary of the Segura. Born in the hamlet of The Sabinar, a few kilometers from Moratalla, and joins the Segura in the Calasparra area. However, for many others, the Alhárabe River is one of those crystalline currents that crosses some of the most beautiful places in the region.

On its way there are many pools where people bathe. Of course, the waters are quite cold, even in summer. It goes through very interesting places, such as the Buitre and Los Álamos mountains, always in the surroundings of Moratalla. A perfect area to do some hiking, especially in autumn or spring, when the weather is good and it is neither too cold nor too hot.

The fauna and vegetation of the Alhárabe is very rich. Along its channel we can see many specimens of otters. And it is that this river is fed by many streams and sources that flow from the Sierra del Zacatín. The places it runs through are magnificent, lush green, inviting you to stroll through them.

Poplar groves, bridges, meadows, mills and ravines open up in your wake. One of the most beautiful places is the one known as the Delivery, with its erect poplars next to the smooth course of the river. Kilometers further down you will discover the Peñon de los Tormos and the Fuente de los Muertos, two other wonderful enclaves.

The entire course of the Alhárabe river is kilometers of natural beauty, crystal clear waters, waterfalls and small pools. There are still old mills that turn and work thanks to the waters of this river. A small route along its shore will lead us to discover unusual places. One of the routes that can be done is the one that takes us from the Risca dam, in Campo de San Juan, until the Somogil thermal pool, fifteen kilometers below.

In this pool the water rises at a constant temperature of 25 degrees, an authentic open-air spa that many tourists usually enjoy. If you want to get lost in the surroundings of Moratalla and enjoy beautiful landscapes, the Alhárabe River is a magnificent opportunity.
