In Norway the landscape of birds is abundant and varied. It is worth contemplating the flight of these species in a practically unaltered nature.
During the spring you will find millions of birds heading north to your arctic breeding grounds. Places like Jæren, south of Stavanger, provide great lookouts, with the chance to see loons (gaviformes) and macaes (podicipediformes), as well as game birds (anseriformes) and waders (charadriiformes).
Delight in the chirping of birds at sunrise: hear the woodpecker (piciformes) drum in the depths of the pine forests and, if you are one of the lucky ones, be amazed by the display of the grouse (tetrao urogallus) spreading its wings. These can be some of the highlights of a morning walk in the woods.
At the end of March, wetlands and swamps come to life with different sounds of birds. Whooper swans (cygnus cygnus), heading north, are loud and their squawks are echoed in the air.
You will hear the song of European lapwings (vanellus vanellus) if you listen carefully; Or perhaps you can hear the vibrating drumming sound of a snipe (gallinago gallinago).
