The Italian School of Painting at the Louvre Museum

Napoleon got the majority of Italian painting, so the Louvre has a very important and representative collection.

Chronologically, we find works by: Giotto (1266-1337) considered the father of modern painting, the museum has one of his most representative works “Saint Francis of Assisi receiving the stigmata”. Paolo Uccello, with his famous work "The Battle of San Romano".

Fra Angelico, with his work "El Calvario". Jacopo Bellini, with "The Virgin of Humility". Fray Filipo Lippi, with "The Virgin and Child between two saints." Piero della Francesca, with the famous portrait of “Segismondo Malatesta”. Mantegna, with his "San Sebastián". Perugino, with the "Combat between love and chastity". Ghirlandaio, with one of the most famous works in the museum "Portrait of an old man and a child".

And finally, among other painters, the works of Leonardo da Vinci stand out, the most famous being “La Gioconda”. Other of his important works are: "The Virgin of the Rocks" which was his first great painting of his Milanese period. Oil on panel crowned by a semicircle, which represents the Virgin with the Child Jesus, at the moment in which she goes to pick up the little Saint John, sheltered in a grotto and protected by an angel.

"La Bella Ferronière", one of the most beautiful portraits of the painter. The lady is depicted in a three-quarter bust on a uniform dark background.

"Santa Ana, the Virgin and the Child". The scene represents the Virgin sitting on the knees of her mother, Santa Ana, trying, stretching out her arms, to separate Jesus from the lamb that symbolizes death. The scene takes place in a timeless landscape, with a background of towering mountains and some trees to the right of the painting.
