The crypt of Santa Cecilia in the Calixto cemetery.

La crypt de Santa Cecilia It is one of the most important places within the catacombs of Callisto. It is known that today the body is not in the place since the Pope Paschal I wanted his remains to be taken to the Basilica of Santa Cecilia In Trastevere, however, it is quite a sight to enter the catacombs and see, at the bottom of them, to the left, what was until the year 821 the site where the sarcophagus of the saint remained.

They worked for many years on the decoration of the niche of Santa Cecilia. Paintings and beautiful mosaics adorned the facade of the niche. If you walk around the place you will see that above the niche an image of the saint is still carved on the walls praying at the foot of an altar. At the bottom of the niche is represented Christ holding the Bleeding Scriptures and on one side of this image you can see the figure of Saint Urban, sitting next to Santa Cecilia praying (both lived at the same time).

Several anthropological studies have been carried out in the crypt of Sta. Cecilia due to the various inscriptions in Latin that were made on the stones around the niche. In addition, several verses carved in classical Greek can be seen today in the lower part of the crypt. These inscriptions are believed to have been preserved from the day of the saint's death.
