The Midsommar Viking Festival

After long months of cold and darkness, it seems logical that the Swedes come to the summer ready to throw the house out the window. More or less, that's what happens on June 24 when it is celebrated Midsummer. On that day, Swedes of all ages bring out their taste for the outdoors and organize picnics in the woods - there are thousands throughout the city - or boat trips out to sea. In these celebrations there are three things that cannot be missing: flowers, the blonde hair is decorated with little crowns; herring and many liters of aguavit, the Scandinavian vodka.

Leaving behind the fears of foreigners, the truth is that it is one of the most important celebrations in this part of the world, along with Christmas. In the woods, you can often see very happy groups dancing around a kind of wooden cross lined with wild flowers while singing songs that everyone knows. And above all realism, the most common song is called "Summer is Short." As is predictable after enduring winters of up to 20 degrees below zero, everyone is very happy to celebrate the summer solstice.

Even the most distracted tourist notices that Midsommar is quite a tradition in Sweden. The story goes that it all started in the Viking era. It was a celebration of fertility with various rituals associated with nature and the hope of a good autumn. Later, the entire celebration was Christianized and it is said that it is celebrated on the day of San Juan Bautista. Already with the feet in modern times, everything seems to indicate that it not only has to do with the official end of the cold or fertility, but with the beginning of a three-month vacation period.
