Because the flag of Austria is red and white

Flag of austria

We have talked on occasion about the long history of the lands that today make up the territory of Austria. Undoubtedly the House of Habsburgs has a very important part in it, but that is ancient history. Since the end of the First World War this house of nobles has disappeared from the map and those who remain are merchants and rich people who have no possibility of being at the head of any State.

Now, if the colors of the House of Habsburg are yellow and black, why are the colors of the Austrian flag not reminiscent of them one bit? Why is the Austrian flag white and red? It seems that the design of the Austrian flag, with three horizontal bars, two red and one white, is based on the coat of arms of the Babenberg dynasty, a noble family that has its origins in the XNUMXth century, present-day Bavarian territory.

The Babenbergs were counts, margraves and dukes in the present regions of Styria, Lower Austria and Upper Austria although the male branch ended up dying out towards the beginning of the XNUMXth century. The next dynasty in present-day Austria would already be that of the Habsburgs, who were not originally descended from the Babenbergs, although at some point the bloods were mixed in the sons of Albert I of Germany. Whatever, the Babenberg coat of arms is the color of the Austrian flag.

In turn, specialists in these things of heraldry believe that the colors derive from the Otakar family and that she adopted it from the House of the Eppenstein, rulers of Styria around the XNUMXth and XNUMXth centuries. Well you know because the flag of Austria is white and red.
