Seegrotte, the largest underground lake in Europe

seegrotte

One of the most incredible caves or cave systems in the world is in Austria. In fact, Austria has many wonderful caves. Some are natural caves and others, like the one you see in the photograph, are caves produced by human hands.

This is the Seegrotte cave. It is located deep within a gypsum mine in the town of Hinterbrühl. It is not a single cave but a network of underground channels that, considered in their entirety, make up the largest underground lake in Europe.

La Seegrotte cave was born in 1912 when after a usual explosion inside the gypsum mine ended badly and the lower galleries were completely flooded. Thus was born a huge underground lake that is about 60 meters below the ground and has an area of around 6200 square meters.

The truth is that the gypsum mine did not work again. In the days of the Second World, the German air force built warplanes on dry levels. Before and after the war Sea caves It was a tourist attraction in Hinterbrühl and still is to this day. In the 30s, for example, people could go boating on that lake and that custom continues to this day.
