The four most important churches in Austria

Christianity has been and is the great religion of Europe and in the Middle Ages the tentacles of Rome's power came in the form of monasteries, convents, churches and cathedrals. In the case of Austria, if you like buildings of a religious nature, you cannot miss especially four of them:

. St. Stephan's Cathedral, in Vienna: it is the cathedral of the Austrian capital, beautiful, elegant, with Gothic sculptures and a lot of steps that take you right to the top of the south tower to enjoy the panoramic views of the city, 137 meters high.

. Melk Abbey: It is situated on a promontory above the Danube River and is one of the finest Baroque-style buildings in the world. Melk is named by Umberto Eco in his famous book The Name of the Rose and also in the German epic poem, Nibelungenlied. It has caught fire several times and has always been reborn from the ashes, like a phoenix.

. The Salzburg Cathedral: It has a 4000 pipe organ and it is a perfect Renaissance style building with an interior decorated with Baroque frescoes. Its towers rise 76 meters and it was consecrated in 1628 although there was already a cathedral in the place since the XNUMXth century.

. The Abbey of St. Florian: It is located in Florian, near Linz, and is the largest Baroque-style Austrian abbey. The current abbey dates from between 1686 and 1751 and honors the Christian martyr of the XNUMXth century. Inside, it keeps the works of art of one of the teachers of the so-called Danube School, Altdorfer.
