Indian clothing

Peikot typical Hindu dress

If there is a country where history, tradition and location are closely related to the garb that, both men and women, have been in rural and more urban areas that is India. The best known Indian clothes are the ieti o lungs, saris, Sherwanis and kurtasAll of them made with fabrics made in the country but with different uses depending on the context, place where you live, whether it is for daily use or for a celebration, etc.

All those people who decide to travel for a long or short time to a country like the India, not only do they fall in love with the magic that is in each of its corners, its buildings or its festivals, but they also gain interest and attraction for the Indian clothes that both men and women wear and how different they can be from a city to another or from one medium to another and the history that each type of clothing may have.

Typical Indian clothing

Sari, typical Indian clothing

One of the garments most used among women is "sari", traditionally made with cotton, silk or blends made in factories with both elements that seek to wrap and cover the body in many ways depending on where the woman who is going to use it lives.

This Hindu dress is usually between 5 and 6 meters long and 1 meter and 20 centimeters wide. It is commonly worn as a tight shirt under another garment or as a longer skirt called "trolls", although there is also what is known as "salwars", wide silk pants with a tunic on top used in mountain areas that are more practical depending on the geography of the place without forgetting something that is very important in the Indian culture such as "veil", highlighting that for example when a Hindu woman marries, her veil is not white but red or pink.

Zaragüelles for Hindu women

Another star garments among Hindu women are "zaraguelles", knee-length or ankle-length pants making a kind of suit with light fabrics that are more used by women in urban areas.

If we focus on men, when they are urbanites the Hindu men's clothing for which they usually opt for long buttoned shirts and baggy pants called "sherwanis", in the event that everything goes together and it is a single piece in the form of pajamas, they are called "Kurta".

Dhoti or lungi, another typical Indian clothing

Dhoti, Hindu dress from India

If we go to rural areas, there is a piece of Indian clothing that was used by both men and women and that, today, with some transformations due to religious themes, above all, continue to have a great presence in these areas.

We are talking about the so-called "Dhoti or lungs", A species of shorts above knee in the case of men and a skirt in the case of women that was used when there were high temperatures. In both cases, no shirt of any kind was worn at the top, until in the 12th century, upon the arrival of the Muslims and their conquest, for religious reasons they ordered women to cover their tops.

A fantastic garment is the "ghagra Choli", commonly used by the population of northwestern India, although each city has a different way of using it: one is the version used in wedding ceremonies, with some embroidery made exclusively for that day while another type is the one used during the time. festival of "Navratri" (nine nights and ten days of festivities in which Durga, a Hindu female goddess).

Men also like to be elegant, and for these occasions they use garments called "sherwani", coat mainly used in the north of the country, in the urban area and for formal occasions, being able to be overshadowed by a variant such as the "achkan", an equally warm jacket but, in this case, knee-length.

Another Indian clothing that can be used by both sexes is the "pheran", a traditional full-length dress which is used especially in winter and very popular with men and women.

Finally, that "puancheis" They are a traditional Hindu dress from the state of Mizoram, worn by women during occasions that are festive or marriage ceremonies. These dresses can be combined in many ways, although the most widespread in this country is to wear it just to a "kawrechi", a white blouse, which fits perfectly with the red and black colors that are usually used in most of the fabric from which the dress is made, used by women while they perform the famous "Bamboo dance", one of the best known both in India and outside of this country.

What did you think of Indian clothes and the typical clothes used by Hindus? Do you like a particular Hindu dress?
