The Black Tower of Prague Castle

This Tower that belongs to the House of Burgrave is one of the oldest constructions of Prague; It was built in 1135 so that the Fort had an entrance from the East.

Black tower

Its name is due to a fire that in 1541 stained it black for a long time; before it was known as Golden Tower by its ceiling covered in bright painted lead plates. During the years 1983 to 1986 some details of the construction were repaired and a special entrance for visitors was built.

When visiting the prison you will see inscriptions on the walls made by the prisoners in the XNUMXth century. The cells located in the highest part were destined for prisoners with debts, a crime considered less important because they had some privileges such as receiving visitors or having objects.

As in prisons the prisoners were not fed their relatives had to bring the food. If for some reason they could not do so, the creditors would have to take charge under pain of death if the prisoner died of hunger.

Under the Torre there is a monument dedicated to Bishop Jan Valerian Jirsik, of great importance for being the last creation of the artist Jan Myslbek. During the Nazi occupation it was damaged but is currently being restored.

Do not forget to stop by the archaeological finds store that is also located in the Torre and to take some photos from the balcony that has an excellent view of the city.
