Kola Peninsula, where the deepest well was dug

La Kola Peninsula is located in northern Russia, in the Oblast of murmausk. It is bordered to the north by the Barenst Sea and to the east and south by the White Sea.

The arctic polar circle crosses the southern sector of the peninsula. The highest altitude is reached at the Cassnacorr peak (1,191 meters above sea level), the soils are thin and little developed. There are numerous lakes and swamps scattered throughout the territory, and the rivers form
several of which are exploited for hydroelectric use.

The climate is harsh, with very low temperatures and a predominance of tundra, except in the south, where the taiga extends and you can find birch, fir and pine forests.

The region's economy is based on the exploitation of its important mineral deposits, which are mainly found in the Jibini Mountains. The population is concentrated on the coast, much of it dedicated to fishing. In the interior the Lapps herd reindeer and, in the extreme south, part of the inhabitants are dedicated to the exploitation of forests and woodworking.

It is worth mentioning that in Kola the deepest well in the world with more than 12,000 meters deep was dug for a scientific project of the USSR
