Rivers of Siberia: Ob

El Ob river It is a large river in the west of Siberia, and is the one with the largest estuary in the world with 16 miles (26 km) southwest of Biysk in the Altai Krai by the confluence of the Biya and Katún rivers.

Both streams originate from the Altay Mountains, the Biya expedition from Lake Teletskoye, the Katun, 80 miles (130 kilometers) long, from a glacier rupture on Mount Byelukha.

The river splits into more than one arm, especially after joining the great tributary Irtysh which is actually longer than the Ob from its source to the point of its confluence.

The navigable waters of the Ob basin reach a total length of 9.300 miles (15.000 km). The importance lies in transport particularly after the completion of the Trans-Siberian railway, since, despite the general south-to-north direction of the Ob stream and most of its tributaries, the width of the planned Ob basin (both indirect) transport in the east-west direction as well.

Until the early 20th century, a particularly important western river port was Tyumen, located on the Tyumen River, a tributary of the Tobol.
