Sculpture in Russia: Vera Mukhina

Vera mukhina It was undoubtedly the greatest sculptor during the time of the Soviet Union who assimilated many artistic concepts including Social Realism, Cubism, and Futurism.

She was an artist of tremendous creative drive and fiery temperament. His most famous work is the monumental stainless steel sculpture "Rabochi i Kolhoznitsa" ("The Worker and Collective Farm Girl"), as seen in the photo.

It is a 79-foot (24-meter) tall monument and was first displayed on top of the Soviet pavilion at the Paris World's Fair (International Exposition) in 1937.

Weighing 75 tons it is located near the headquarters of the All Russia Exhibition Center (VDNKh) in Moscow.

Vera Ignatievna Mukhina was born in Riga on June 19 (July 1) 1889 in the family of a merchant. He spent his childhood and youth (from 1892 to 1904) in the coastal city of Theodosia. There, the future artist took her first drawing and painting classes.

After finishing the classical school he moved to Moscow, where he studied in the workshop of the famous landscape painter Yuon K. (1909-1911), and later went on to the less academic Mashkov I. (1911-12).

Vera Mukhina completed her education in Paris - at the Academy of Fine Arts, at F. Colarossi Academies, the Palette and the Grand Chaumiere (in the latter very important were the classes of Emile Antoine Bourdelle [French Expressionist sculptor, 1861-1929.

Many of the Mukhina projects remained unrealized, including the monument to Y. Sverdlov and Lenin. M. There is a museum of Vera Mukhina in Theodosia and one of the streets in the Peredelkino district of Moscow is named after her.
