Climate in northern Russia

In the Far North of Russia there are the Arctic deserts and the tundra where the temperatures in the warmest month do not exceed 10 degrees below zero. Throughout the year (Arctic deserts) or for 10 months (tundra) these areas are covered with snow. There are no trees, only some vegetation in the tundra composed of mosses, lichens and grasses. Here you can find the dwarf birch but it is so small that it is not considered a tree.

Evaporation is very scarce so there are many swamps covered by moss where red berries grow, rich in vitamin C and with which they prepare the candies. Among the different animals in this area you can find foxes and rodents. There are also reindeer that are the basis of the aboriginal economy. Their traditional occupation is to graze reindeer, hunt walruses and seals, and fish. Meat and fish make up almost the entire diet in the region, where there are almost no plant-based foods. Their normal houses are tuntas made of reindeer, walrus and seal skins.

The igloo is a snow house that is only used temporarily during storms, inside these houses you cannot light a fire.
