Animals in India (V): The goat

The goat

The goat is known in India as "the poor man's cow" as it requires only a small investment to raise goats. Hence, farmers with very low economic resources see in the goat a profitable solution to the creation of a small business that allows them to subsist.

The goat is also an ideal animal for cultivating dry land, characteristic of much of India. There are pages on the internet where goats are bought and sold, something very curious since the owner puts a photo of the goat along with his contact information. It is undoubtedly a very well cared for and loved animal in this country, and in places like Ahmedabad you can see goats covered with cloths protected from the low temperatures.

My Australian friend and photographer Josh Van Cuylenburg who lives in Dhaka (Bangladesh), told us first-hand about his chilling experience during the celebration of the eid ul zuha, translated as "The Celebration of the Sacrifice" or "The Feast of the Lamb", it is a festival carried out by Muslims in which around 500.000 goats are sacrificed commemorating a passage collected in the Koran.

Josh said that he was going to leave the house one day with a couple of friends and suddenly he found his street 5 centimeters high covered in blood, coming from the dead goats. That there were goats slaughtered in the middle of the street and that they stayed there for a couple of days, long enough to create a foul and unpleasant smell.
