History of Indian Politics

This time we are going to dedicate ourselves to talking about the politics in India. Let's start by mentioning that India is the most populous democracy in the world. It is a parliamentary republic with a multi-party system that has six recognized national parties.

El congressional party of India is considered center-left or 'liberal', while the party BJP center-right or 'conservative'.

In the Republic of India the first three general electionsIn 1951, 1957 and 1962, Jawaharlal Nehru of the Congress party led the victories. On Nehru's death in 1964, Lal Bahadur Shastri briefly became prime minister, and was succeeded, after his unexpected death in 1966 by Indira Gandhi, who went on to lead the Congress Party in electoral victories in 1967 and 1971.

After public discontent, a state of emergency was declared in 1975, the Congress Party came out of power in 1977. The then-new Janata Party, which had opposed the state of emergency, won and its government lasted little more than three years. Elected back to power in 1980, the Congress party produced a change in leadership in 1984, when Indira Gandhi was assassinated, and was succeeded by her son Rajiv Gandhi, who won in the general elections that same year.

The Congress party was re-elected in 1989 when a coalition National Front, led by the newly formed Janata Dal Party, in alliance with the Left Front, won the elections.
Elections were held again in 1991, no party obtained an absolute majority. But the Congress party was able to form a minority government led by PV Narasimha Rao.

A two-year period of political turmoil followed the 1996 general elections. The BJP formed a brief government in 1996. In 1998, the BJP was able to form a successful coalition, the National Democratic Alliance, led by Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

In the 2004 general elections, no party obtained an absolute majority, but the Congress party emerged as the largest party.

The UPA returned to power in the 2009 general elections with a larger number. That same year, Manmohan Singh, became the Prime Minister from the Jawaharlal Nehru in 1957 and 1962 to be re-elected for a consecutive five-year term.
