The Tang Dynasty

Tang dynasty

Last week we talked about the Ming Dynasty, one of the most important imperial dynasties in China as it meant great cultural growth. Another of the most important and well-known Chinese dynasties is the Tang dynasty.

The Tang Dynasty goes through a period that begins in 618 and ends in 907. They were centuries of growth, power and prosperity in the political, cultural, economic and military fields. But what is the history of the rise and fall of the Tang Dynasty? Towards the XNUMXth century the reign of the Sui Dynasty was ending, which would last less than a century, in a chaotic and uncontrolled situation that caused rebellions to explode throughout the country. That is the beginning of the story.

One of the imperial officers stationed in Taiyuan, Li Yuan, organized an army that ended up capturing the imperial capital, present-day Xian city, placing a new emperor on the throne. Li Yuan proclaimed himself Prime Minister and King of Tang, but a year later the emperor was assassinated and then the rebel officer ended up emperor of China and Xian remained as the capital, although at that time his name was Chang'an.

The Tang Dynasty grew strong during the first decades, between 627 and 649. Trade prospered and social peace reigned. In the following decades a couple of women would become empresses and there would be coups, but none of that would alter the path of the empire. But everything has an end and in the XNUMXth century corruption and poor performance by some court emperors, councilors and eunuchs complicated the situation. The Tang Dynasty began to decline and in 907 the last emperor, Ai, reigned, who was forced to leave the throne.
