Afro-Colombian music

In the slave business at the time of the conquest, a large population of African origin landed in what is now Colombia. That is why we find that African musical traditions are present in the Colombian coastlines, thus, since the seventeenth century, new languages ​​of speech, music and dance appeared in different regions of Colombia and in each one special combinations and tones are presented.

The drum and percussion instruments are protagonists of Afro-Colombian music, the music and the musical instruments themselves are used both in ritual contexts and in carnival festivities.

The chirimía is used to generally refer to the folk music of the department of Choco, which contains a variety of rhythms, currulao, abozao, tambourine, they are chocoano, bambazu, raises dust, plays, etc.

The department of Choco is currently populated by black people, the Embera, Waunana and Cuna indigenous peoples. The black is located in towns located on the banks of the rivers, the indigenous, also live, on the banks, but especially towards the headwaters of the rivers, sites chosen as a form of isolation and historical resistance to the advance and harassment of conquerors , colonists and blacks.
