Candelaria desert, magical landscapes

Candelaria Desert

The department of Boyacá is recognized for being a territory in which páramo areas abound; but among its main natural attractions stands out an arid area of great historical and cultural significance, the La Candelaria desert.

It is located seven kilometers northeast of the municipality of Raquira, and thirty-two kilometers southwest of the municipality of Villa de Leyva.

It is a place of wonderful landscapes in which a small stream that runs through it is present, and important green areas that provide an aspect of magical contrast. Corn plantations, tomato crops and some fruit trees accompany the visitors' tour.

Nearby is the Candelaria Monastery, an architectural complex dating from the early seventeenth century and which became nothing more and nothing less than the first monastery that the Augustinian monks founded in America. At present it is destined for the novitiate of the Augustinian Fathers and for spiritual retreats, although it provides lodging services to tourists, with the care of a group of nuns.
