International Women's Day in Cuba

El International Women's Day Cuba is celebrated on March 8 as in most countries of the world. For generations, women who feel very proud of living together in a society that is synonymous with women's rights and the value of their participation in Cuban Revolution.

This anniversary will be marked by round tables, workshops, film screenings and exhibitions. Meanwhile, female students, workers, leaders, retirees and home holders will be honored in the schools, workplaces and neighborhoods of the Caribbean island.

A century ago, women in the world, followed by the German Clara Zetkin, leader and began to celebrate this day that is marked in many countries by marginalization, violence and prostitution.

Cuban women have dignified the Cuban Revolution, and according to official figures, they represent 46,7 percent of the civil state sector, 67 percent of university graduates and 65,7 percent of technicians and professionals.

In addition, they constitute more than 70 percent of health and education, 51 percent of investigations, 56 percent of judges, and in Parliament they reach 43,32 percent.

The Secretary General of the Federation of Cuban Women, Yolanda Ferrer, has stated on several occasions that Cuba strictly carries out international obligations on gender issues.

Ferrer argues that the political will of Cuba has made it possible for women to be direct beneficiaries of programs and plans that allow their insertion into economic, political, social and cultural life.

She emphasized that progress despite the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States on our island half a century ago, and is considered the greatest form of violence against Cuban women.

In Cuba, International Women's Day was celebrated for the first time in 1931. The event was organized by the Central of National Workers of Cuba and the Federation of Workers of Havana and had its headquarters in the room located at 8
Revillagigedo street, in Old Havana.

At present, although Cuban women have great differences in the area and around the world in terms of social inclusion, politics and intellectual development, they are still struggling against the backwardness entrenched as an androcentric vision, and the just recognition of their more than proven ability, intelligence and will.
