The conga, Cuban instrument and rhythm

La congasWho has not heard of her? It's about a musical instrument of Cuban origin that derives from the drums and that over time has evolved in its design and in the way it is played. In addition, it has resulted in rhythm, one of the Caribbean and Cuban rhythms par excellence, and immediately triggers the movement of the skeleton.

Besides being an instrument, the truth is that the conga it is danced and also sung and its history dates back to the festivities organized by black slaves during colonial times, mainly on the Corpus Christi festival during the Epiphany of Kings. Conga is said to dance and also to the musical groups that interpret their music and each one has some characteristics that define them.

In principle, what instruments does a conga group have to have? You must have a Bell, bass drum, cowbell, several twins, fifth, drummer, the pans, the grate, the trumpet, the tumbadora and finally the trombone. From these instruments come the characteristic notes of the conga, although each region of Cuba gives it its own personal touch (for example, in Santiago de Cuba the Chinese trumpet and a drum called bocú are used).

We usually see people dancing conga in a carnival troupe, hear how this rhythm moves the floats in certain choreographies or listen to it in a disco at full volume. The conga is present in every popular festival and its evolution was so great that since the 30s of the XNUMXth century it is already considered a ballroom dancing. Who doesn't remember the Gloria Stefan song that conga used to say all the time? And who has not returned from Cuba humming one?
