Pico Turquino, the highest mountain in Cuba

turquoise peak

Cuba is not an island with huge and high mountains but it does have its own and among them the highest point of the entire island is called Turquino Peak. The mountain rises about 1974 meters above sea level and is right in the center of the famous Sierra maestra, the island's mountain range.

Below Pico Turquino there is a landscape of 17.540 hectares of forests, valleys, other peaks and many rivers. It is one of the most important tourist destinations for those who want to go on excursions or eco-tourism, and to reach its top it is necessary to do many turns, and cross steep landscapes. While there are trails, it can cost a bit.

The area is very well preserved and protected and there are two well-marked trails to climb Pico Turquino, one starts in the province of Granma and the other starts in the province of Santiago de Cuba. It was in the surroundings of this peak where the guerrillas who responded to Castro hid when the fight against the Batista government ended in the revolution. At its top there is a monument to Jose Marti Perez, the hero of Cuba and fighter for the independence of Spain.

    Two things must be said:

Climbing the Pico Turquino costs much more than a little and Jose Julian Martí Pérez did not fight for the independence of Spain, but for that of Cuba against Spanish colonialism. Castro is the first surname of Fidel Castro Ruz, incomparable leader of the Cuban Revolution and the guerrillas never hid; rather, in the vicinity of Turquino they made hundreds of ambushes that were very costly for the troops of the bloodthirsty Sanchez Mosquera, an assassin of the army of the tyrant Batista.
