Christmas in the Dominican Republic is very special. The Christmas atmosphere has been lived since the second half of November and it begins with the adornment in the houses and streets, allusive music in the radios, the mass of the gallo, the good night dinner and culminates in the morning of December 25 with a classic hot chocolate.
The month of November is the preamble to Christmas. Millions of Dominican households spend hours of hours decorating their homes with the classic Christmas decorations and the play of lights that gives it a special glow at night. The streets and shops also compete for the best decoration.
Assembling the nativity scene or manger involves the whole family, parents and children decorate piece by piece each of the details of the birth of the baby Jesus. In the Dominican Republic, unlike other countries, there is the particularity of placing the baby Jesus in his manger from the moment he arms the birthIn other countries the baby Jesus is placed in the first minutes of Christmas.
December 24 is the central date, the absent relatives or abroad are already in the family, the party atmosphere is lived in each family, the allusive music is contagious and prior to the Rooster Mass, the family gathers at a table to enjoy Christmas dinner.
One of the favorite dishes at Christmas dinner is the whole pig roasted in puja, also the baked pork leg and the traditional baked turkey could not be missed.
After dinner, a spirituality ritual is carried out, it is the traditional Mass of the Gallo that is celebrated in the Catedral Primada de América and in every Catholic Church in the country. At midnight, the whole town is confused in endless hugs, as they are celebrating the birth of the baby Jesus. Without a doubt, moments of great peace and love for the entire Catholic population of the country.
