La Chandeleur, tradition and crêpes

Within two days, that is, the February 2, will be held throughout France the day of the Candlemas, one of the most popular and oldest festivals in the whole country. Officially it is a religious holiday which takes place 40 days after Christmas, in which the presentation of the Child Jesus in the Temple of Jerusalem and the purification of the Virgin Mary are commemorated.

This day is also celebrated in some parts of our geography what is known as the Fiesta de la Candelaria, especially in Tenerife, where it seems that the Virgin Mary made an appearance. However, in France, although the Chandeleur also has its origin in this religious festival, the adaptation that we find today has more to do with a culinary feast that with a feast of a Christian character, although said feast is also accompanied by the traditional mass, in which people must carry a candle that will be later blessed by the priest.

The traditional thing in France is that on the night of February XNUMX, the famous crêpes and that during the day we take care of preparing them. Tradition says that each member of the family must bake a crêpe, keeping in one of the hands a gold coin. This, apparently, is a kind of amulet that serves to protect the family from economic scarcity throughout the year.

Despite the fact that many people do not know why this peculiar and culinary tradition, everyone eagerly awaits it. When preparing the crêpes we find a lot of combinations, although the really important thing is to know the art of cooking them, that is, turn them with one hand and make them jump out of the pan, all without ending up in the pan. floor or glued to the ceiling and with the gold coin in the other hand.
