The archaeological site of Philippi, in Macedonia

Philippi

Philippi is a city east of Macedonia which was founded by Philip II in 336 BC. According to the Ministry of Culture of Greece this city is the archeological site most important in this part of Macedonia, so you should not miss it. Also, it is one of the sites you visited San Pablo in their missionary trips and therefore it is also an important place for the entire Christian community that arrives on a pilgrimage trip here to Greece.

Well, the site is very large and has many structures so there is a lot to see. It is located at the foot of Mount Orbelos, the modern Mount Lekani, about 8 miles north of Kavala, and at the time of its foundation its purpose was to control the nearby gold mines and control the strategic passage of the area. Hence, fortifications abound. From the Greek period there remains a theater, the foundations of a house under the Roman forum, some walls and a small temple dedicated to the founding hero of the city.

Basilica-Philippi

The city gained importance in the Roman period with the Battle of Philip where the heirs of Julius Caesar confront their murderers, and from the period more walls, the forum and an agora can be seen. What is there to see then? The Roman Forum, the shopping street, the Basilica of 550 AD, the prison of San Pablo, more basilicas and of course, the Archaeological Museum of Philippi.
